Sex is the not only a bodily need, it is also a way to connect with your partner emotionally. It is a way to show love and support.

Making Love During Pregnancy

One should always view a situation in a positive way. Consider pregnancy as a great time to explore different aspects of love. Many women are more sexually aroused during pregnancy or it can be a desire greater than sexual satisfaction.

Having sex during pregnancy is entirely depends on your medical condition. It also depends on condition of the other person involved.

However, it is always a good idea to consult your doctor or health care provider before having sex during pregnancy. Unless your doctor advises otherwise, it is safe to have sex during pregnancy.

Most women do not feel like having sex during the first trimester of pregnancy. When a woman becomes pregnant, many hormonal changes take place in a woman’s body. Due to this, one may feel tired through the day. A woman may suffer from nausea, morning sickness, vomiting tendency, frequent urination etc. These changes may reduce your sexual activity.

In the second trimester of pregnancy, a woman is already accustomed with her new situation as she has already gone through these changes. Women feel better physically, emotionally and sexually. In this trimester, there is an increased blood flow in the entire pelvic area. Due to this, women may feel like engaging in some sexual activity.

In the third trimester of pregnancy, there is a decrease in the sexual appetite of a woman. Fatigue may be one the reasons. As your baby grows rapidly in this period, you may feel that sexual activity may hurt your baby. There is also increase in the baby’s movement inside the uterus. You may feel that your baby is uncomfortable because of your sexual activity. Large womb size can be another reason for your decreased sexual desire.

There are several worries about sex during pregnancy, which arises in women’s mind like

  • Intercourse during pregnancy could hurt the baby.
  • Sex during pregnancy could lead to miscarriage.
  • Intercourse can cause severe pain.
  • Baby in the uterus would feel uncomfortable.

These kinds of worries are perfectly normal and there is no harm in giving a thought to this. Most of these worries are baseless.

Intercourse during pregnancy cannot hurt the baby, as there is a layer of amniotic fluid around it and thick mucus plug which closes the cervix. This layer works as cushion, which protects the baby. Sex during pregnancy cannot lead to miscarriage. However, if you have a history of miscarriage, your doctor may advise not to have sex during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Under normal circumstances when you are having a normal pregnancy, sex will not cause severe pain.

Your baby is perfectly protected by thick uterus muscles and a layer of amniotic fluid. There is no reason to feel uncomfortable.

When to avoid sex during pregnancy

Avoid having sex under any of the following circumstances and contact your doctor or health care provider immediately

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Preterm labor
  • When you or your partner suffering from sexually transmitted disease
  • If you have history of premature birth or labor
  • Placenta pervia
  • Broken water

Usually, one can have sex throughout the pregnancy. However, it is always advisable to consult your doctor who will help you professionally to get rid of this kind of fear.
